Panel 2 — The Smart City Paradox
Artificial Intelligence, Equity, and Everyday Urban Life
At FABER Forum 2025, Panel 2 explored the tension at the heart of today’s urban transformation: how artificial intelligence can make cities smarter without making them less human.
Moderated by Dr. Gustavo de Siqueira (Associate Professor, GUtech), the session brought together experts from architecture, engineering, technology, and academia:
The discussion examined the promises and risks of AI in urban life, from more efficient mobility systems and smarter infrastructure to the challenges of algorithmic bias, digital surveillance, and data ethics. Speakers reflected on how cities can adopt intelligent technologies while protecting privacy, safeguarding vulnerable communities, and maintaining public trust.
Key themes included digital governance, citizen-centred design, accessibility, and responsible innovation. Rather than positioning technology as a solution on its own, the panel emphasized that inclusive smart cities require strong institutions, transparent data systems, and meaningful public participation.
At its core, the conversation asked a critical question:
How can technological progress coexist with equity, justice, and truly human-centred urban futures?
